Smell This: Interview with Perfumer, Sophie Labbe for The Body Shop

Hello again,

In all honesty, I was really excited when I heard that Sophie Labbe was the perfumer behind The Body Shop’s new fragrance. I was even more excited when I found out she would be flying out from Paris to be in-store  at Mall of the Emirates on the 7th October for the 30th birthday celebration! I’ve been a huge fan of her work ever since Bluemarine’s Bellissima. This is her. Such a beautiful picture, huh?

Meeting her in person was incredible. She was so down to earth and gracious! I always enjoy meeting and talking to perfumers as perfumery is something that I am very fond of and often times, I have dreamed about taking the next step into that field! Shh! Don’t be laughin’ at me –  a girl can dream!

At the event, I sat down with Sophie to ask her a couple of questions about the perfume she created for The Body Shop; White Musk Smoky Rose which is an enigmatic, tantalizing and floriental fragrance, a brilliant addition to the brand’s iconic cruelty-free White Musk Range. If you can re-call the first couple of stuff I posted here on D&D, you would know that I am normally not a huge fan of musk scents. Honestly, I am not a big fan of The Body Shop’s original White Musk although I loved the Libertine one! This one, however, just tops the charts!

Before I post the interview, here’s a picture of Sophie and I at the event! (Find more details and pictures of the event here.)

I look so awful in this picture. Ughh! But Sophie, well, she is a very gentle and funny character; while we were being bombarded with photographers who were all clicking a whole lot of pictures of us together, she whispered to me how crazy it was and that the people outside the store would think that we were some sort of celebrities that they had never seen or heard of!  Hahaha.

Alright, let’s find out what she had to say about the new perfume and her collaboration with The Body Shop, shall we?

1.) Sophie, when did you become interested in fragrances and how did you become a perfumer?

I didn’t know that this profession existed but I was very interested in smelling things, people, perfumes, everything. The sense of smell was so important for me. When I was studying Biology & Chemistry I heard about the School ISIPICA that was training perfumers. My encounter with Jean Karléo, the In House perfumer of Jean Patou at that time, convinced me that this was the path I wanted to follow.

2.) What was the inspiration behind the White Musk Smoky Rose?

The idea was to create an evening fragrance; very feminine, mysterious, sophisticated and sensual: the “deep and mysterious” side of White Musk.

3.) Talk us through the ingredients. What makes the fragrance unique according to you?

The association between the black rose and the tobacco accord is definitely what gives White Musk Smoky Rose a unique and magnetic trail.

-The black rose accord is built from my own imagination with rose petals, a juicy plum and a hint of dark chocolate for an irresistible addiction.

-The tobacco flower is multifaceted: it is smoky, spicy and tasty with its honey and tonka undertones. It introduces a subversive masculine note in this ultra-feminine fragrance.

-The musk accord is a combination of musks with a hint of patchouli for a depth and mystery. For the smoky side, some intoxicating olibanum oil was added.

4.) What emotions would you like the wearer of this perfume to feel?

I imagine the women wearing White Musk Smoky Rose would feel ultra-feminine, daring, sophisticated and sensual.

5.) What perfume family would you say you belong to? I appreciate that you work a lot with perfumes; therefore it may be difficult to answer. However, what about right now?

The family of White Musk Smoky Rose is Floral Oriental. For me, I would say that I belong to the perfume family that brings the most emotions!

6.) Can we expect to see any further collaboration between you and The Body Shop?

I really hope there will be further collaboration with The Body Shop because I enjoyed developing a new fragrance for the iconic White Musk Family!

7.) Which is your favorite – the original White musk or the White Musk Libertine?

Definitely, the original because I have great memories associated with it. It was launched 30 years ago when I was a teenager and whenever I think of it or wear it today, all those memories come rushing back to me!

8.) What’s next for you, Sophie?

It is secret! Shh!

Well, Sophie, I look forward to discovering your next creation and I hope to see you and The Body Shop collaborate more as you have both created a remarkably fine fragrance!

There you have it! That concludes my little chat with the wonderful Sophie Labbe. I can seriously see myself showering myself with the newly launched fragrance during the evenings. It truly is a mysterious and sensual scent and I believe that it is going to do extremely well in this part of the world.

Smell This: Lolita Lempicka’s Elle L’aime

Hello angels,

It’s been a while since I posted a fragrance review! With this post, I want to introduce Lolita Lempicka’s Elle L’aime to you. I’ve always loved all of Lolita’s fragrances. In three words, I would describe most of the fragrances as feminine, playful and romantic. This one is no different!

According to Lolita Lempicka, Elle L’aime, the newest fragrance from the brand was inspired by the radiance of a woman in love and it embodies the divine state of being in love!  With this fragrance, Lolita Lempicka writes an important page of its own story that has always been at the heart of the brand: “L” for Lolita and “Lem” for Lempicka. Pretty clever, huh?

Take a look at the above picture – how gorgeous is the bottle? Its beauty truly cannot be ignored so let’s start by talking about the bottle. The totem shaped golden jewel of a bottle captures a lot of light that apparently symbolizes eternal love to anyone who possesses it. What I love the most is the gold letters that are inscribed on it! Stunning isn’t it? This is one of those perfume bottles that’s worth keeping long after the juice within has been emptied.

Moving on to the scent – It’s a very warm and sensual oriental-floral! It is currently my perfume of the day so as I write this, I am constantly sniffing my wrists to try and get the entire feel of it more! Haha. The notes include rare and natural extracts of a Coconut Flower infused with sensuous Jasmine and precious Myrrh. It blends a luxurious floral bouquet and the sensuous charm of a natural coconut pulp. The coconut scent is predominant and unfortunately, it’s not as long-lasting as I hoped it would be but this sweet and warm fragrance has been my selected scent for this whole week so far. It provides a certain delicacy and softness that I miss on busy days and transports me to an ethereal world the minute I spritz it on.

Rewind – How about you direct your eyes back up to the subheader? A shutterbug in love! That’s right – I am completely mesmerized by the beauty of this gem hence I got all click-happy with the camera! Here are some other shots.

I know, I know – they’re all taken in pretty much the same angles but oh well! Back to the perfume now – Elle L’aime EDP, the essence of true love is available for AED 305 for the 40ml bottle and AED 425 for the 80ml bottle. It can be purchased from Paris Gallery and Areej stores in the UAE from the second week of October.

I love the perfume’s film campaign – take a look:

Smell This: Fragrance of the Day – So…? Fab

Hello dolls,

Today, I am wearing a scent that I’ve been obsessed with ever since I was a teenager.

You guessed right, it’s story-time again! When I was around 15 years old, my mom went out shopping and came back with three bottles of a perfume called Morning Dew, one each for me and my two sisters, and I am telling you – it was love at first smell.

A couple of months later, we were all so dismayed that only a few drops remained in the bottle. Once it was all over, we saved the bottles so we could get a whiff of it every time we took off the bottle cap, like addicts, I tell you! That had to do, since we were unable to find Morning Dew anywhere.

Close to three years ago, I went to Lifestyle to stock up on some beauty prods from NYX and Bourjois. Being the fragrance freak that I am, I couldn’t help but notice this brand of  fragrances called So…? With simple bottles, and a whole lot of attitude as the brand states, I picked up one to….Uh-oh. Hold on a minute, we’ve got to rewind. I just realized what I was thinking isn’t the actual story and I can’t really take the credit for what I am about to tell you! So where was I? Oh yes – While I was stocking up on some beauty products from Lifestyle, my sister who was standing just inches away was also checking out the merchandise and that’s when she  (Tanya, my sister) grabbed me by the arm  so tightly that I wanted to turn back and strike her face! Grr! When I turned around, she said this: “Ylova!! Morning Dew!!

However, it was definitely not Morning Dew but something else called, So…? Fab.

So...? Fab Bottle
So…? Fab Bottle

Boy oh boy, they smelled exactly identical to each other!  We were so psyched and couldn’t contain our joy! I immediately picked up two bottles and proceeded to the checkout counter to make my purchase. They costed around AED 78 for a bottle.

Let’s talk about the fragrance a little bit now, shall we? (Story time isn’t quite over yet though, so don’t get too happy!) The website describes So..?Fab as a fragrance for festival babes and bohemian  beauties! What’s in it? Top notes of Bergamot & Freesia, Heart notes of Jasmine Petals & Cedarwood and Base notes of Praline, Vanilla beans and Musks.  I’ve been wearing this fun scent every now and then for quite a long time now as you may know now from my story above.

Here's my second bottle of the fragrance - almost all used up!
Here’s my first bottle of the fragrance – almost all used up!

It is super sweet and warm and just like any other fragrance, is intensified in the heat, so it smells super amazing when it’s all hot and humid outside. It is indeed long-lasting especially for its price. I mean, I’ve paid for some high end perfumes that don’t even last past lunchtime! What’s up with that? If you like sweet fragrances, I would definitely suggest you get this one from your nearest Lifestyle store or at least I hope you would want to after reading this.

Back to story-time – around Christmas time last year, I made my way to Centrepoint to do some shopping when I came across So..?Fab once again! This time, they were on sale for AED 3o a bottle! I bought around 6, I think. -_- For myself and my sisters. My share of unopened bottles are still waiting in my closet to be used and I am just so glad that I know where I can get them once my bottle finishes. We are all so glad to have Morning Dew‘s scent once more and glad that this time around, we didn’t make the mistake of getting just one bottle each! So yippe for us!

Just a close up :-)
Just a close up :-)

The UK’s So…? brand has other fragrances such as So…?Superstar and So…?Kiss me. These are the only other two that I have tried but So…?Fab remains to be incomparable!

So…? you know how on Youtube videos, they’ve got that yellow dot/mark thing on the playback bar to show when the product review actually starts? I should probably start doing that with my posts too LOL. I admit, sometimes I do get super carried away, but hey, I am a writer and I suppose that should make it fair, noh?!

Smell This: Fragrance of the Day – Issey Miyake’s A Scent

Issey Miyake's A Scent
Issey Miyake’s A Scent

This is my second time owning a bottle of Miyake’s A Scent. I admire and appreciate the simplicity of the name, the bottle and of course, its scent which is reminiscent of freshly cut grass and dew drops.

I got this as a birthday gift from my big sister last year, after adding it on to my wishlist! I was so pleased that she actually got me the gift set that included the shower gel and body lotion. When I wear the perfume with those two, it intensifies the amazing scent to a whole new level. This is my ultimate spring/summer scent. Whenever I wear this green, floral, woody fragrance, I can’t help but to be transported into a world where minimalism, peace and nature prevail.

I never fail to spritz this fragrance (or any fragrance for that matter) onto my hair! I just love how whenever the wind blows, I get a whiff of  A Scent and it comes at me like the scent of flowers residing in a secret garden that have been playing hide & seek with swaying trees. Alright, the poet in me is getting carried away now! I apologize. Haha.

Back to the fragrance – it can and will last you the WHOLE day which is another reason you should get it if you like fresh & transparent scents. I sprayed it on my pulse points this morning and of course, my hair and I can still smell it till now.

So what’s in it? Top notes of verbana, heart notes of hyacinth and jasmine and base notes of galbanum. How gorgeous is that simple & clean block of glass bottle too? I have a feeling this perfume is going to be on my wishlist year after year. I can’t imagine going a single summer without it from now on.

Beauty Haul: Boots #1

Hello, hello!

As you keep reading this blog, you will learn how big of a fragrance and hair addict I am! I won’t start by raving about my addiction just yet though! Instead, let’s talk about my visit to the mall recently!

So, I am sure this happens to everybody – you walk into Boots for everyday essentials that should amount to AED 30-50 and then you eventually find yourself spending far too much time in the store and AED 100+ at the checkout counter. That is exactly what happened to me when I visited Boots’ branch in Ibn Battuta Mall.

Lee Stafford, Umberto Giannini, Soap & Glory @ Boots
Lee Stafford, Umberto Giannini, Soap & Glory @ Boots

As you can see, most of what I walked away were travel-sized products which I love since I tend to stay away from home, at a friend’s for long periods of time every now and then. That being said, let’s start with D&D‘s first ever mini reviews!

Soap & Glory's Mist You Madly
Soap & Glory’s Mist You Madly

Soap & Glory Mist You Madly – This was my first ever Soap & Glory purchase! I know, I know – how could I possibly be a frequent visitor to Boots and never walk out with anything Soap & Glory!? (especially ’cause their packaging is so fun!) There’s a first time for everything though, right?
This body mist has the cutest name, don’t you agree? To be honest, I didn’t pay good attention to the scent when I bought it which is why I was ultimately disappointed. I picked up the product because of the packing and the notes that were written on it which stated bergamot, blackcurrant, magnolia, freesia, vanilla and musk which are all scents that I love aside from the latter which I don’t really care for all that much!
Much to my dismay, musk was all I could smell when I sprayed it on my skin! If you are a fan of musk, give it a go but I want my money back!

Boots Haul 03
Lee Stafford’s Heat Protection Mist, Shine Spray, Hold Tight Hair Spray & Dehumidifier

Lee Stafford Poker Straight Flat Iron Protection Shine Mist – This product does just what it says it does and real well too! Just like all the other Lee Stafford products though, it has a fairly strong scent that may be unbearable to some people (the reason why I stopped using Lee Stafford’s dry shampoos.) The scent of this product dies down a bit after a while though which is good! Honestly, I prefer Umberto Giannini’s Love it Straight Heat Protection Mist over it! Keep reading to find out why!

Lee Stafford Poker Straight Dehumidifier – Let me start by saying that the scent of this LS product isn’t as strong as the rest which is admirable! What I love most about this product is that it keeps the hair from frizzing which, let’s face it is a necessity when it comes to the humidity over here! It is also very handy to keep your hair in check after exercising or when you are out clubbing! It also gives a nice feel to the hair. Suffice to say, I will definitely be re-purchasing this after I’m left with an empty bottle! I carry it with me everywhere I go for perfect and super straight hair and you should too! A definite summer must-have. That’s what’s up!

Lee Stafford Shine Head Spray Shine – I fell in love with shine sprays after I visited Wow Beauty Salon in Dubai Marina which was the first tine I ever had such a product sprayed on to my hair. Since then, whenever I’d visit a beauty salon, (I frequent many, since sadly I have yet to find that one special, permanent styling house – any suggestions?)I would ask my hairdresser to spray such a product on my hair for a beautiful finish but I only ever got normal hairsprays which is why I was so glad to come across this! This shine spray makes the hair look healthy and glossy and prevents it from looking too greasy at the same time. A great finishing product after using a blow dryer and/or flat iron which I tend to make use of every three days.

Lee Stafford Hold Tight Firm Hold Hair Spray – I love, love, love this hairspray! I rarely wear hairspray mostly because I absolutely detest that crispy hair feel which is unfortunate because I need it after I curl my hair since my hair is soft and hardly holds tight curls for long but with this – no more crispy hair even if you spray a whole lot, which I do! The trick is to spray it far enough from your hair to avoid the yucky crispiness! This fine and light hairspray allows your hair to gently blow in the wind while still staying in place and it washes out very easily! That’s what’s up!

Boots Haul 04
Umberto Giannini’s Love It Straight Heat Protection Mist & Incredible Body Blow Dry Spray

Umberto Giannini Love It Straight Heat Protection Mist – As mentioned above, I pick this heat protection mist any day over Lee Stafford’s mostly because the scent is divine and what girl doesn’t like her hair smelling uber yummy, especially on date night? I am guilty of spraying perfume on my hair just because I love my hair to always smell good but with this product – perfume is no longer needed! When sprayed onto the hair, it comes out as a light mist and keeps the hair smooth and soft right after straightening! This along with the next are my first Umberto Giannini buys and I can’t wait to discover more! That’s what’s up!

Umberto Giannini Incredible Body Blow dry Spray – Just like the above Giannini product, the scent is lovely. You are supposed to spritz the product on both roots and lengths of damp hair before styling for a beautiful bounce and added oomph! To be honest, I did not notice much of a difference when I used it but maybe it’s because I already blow dry my hair in a way that retains volume! Have you tried this product? Does it work for you and your hair?

All in all, I was super pleased with my Boots haul especially the travel-sized products! I can’t wait to discover more from these brands however just the other day I went to Boots, Dubai Mall and they told me that they have stopped selling Lee Stafford products and that it was only exclusive to Boots! Did you know about this? Have you seen Lee Stafford products elsewhere?

Which product have you tried from the above? What was your experience like?
